Graduate School of International Management
IT Concentration in MBA Program

The GSIM at IUJ developed an MBA Program in 1988 in collaboration with the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College, USA. With the aim of developing global leaders well-prepared for the future, the program is built upon an original curriculum which focuses on the comparative analysis of global issues from a Japan-Asia perspective, while also adhering to the high standards set for a global MBA education. Through this unique approach, the GSIM has established itself as a leading graduate business school in Japan and Asia.
As our MBA program grew, it became clear that we needed a more IT technology-oriented program to meet the growing demand for managers with IT technology and business skills. The IT Concentration at GSIM-MBA Program has been developed in line with such need for producing the Business Leaders with IT background and the curriculum has been enhanced in collaboration with the E-Business Management (EBM) Program which was started in 2001 at GSIM.

Features of the Curriculum

Producing New Leaders with IT and Management skills
Information Technology (IT), despite being around for close to half a century, still is not well understood by business executives or government administrators — often the role of IT is neglected or misunderstood. IT-oriented examples of successes, failures, and lost opportunities abound in all kinds of businesses, from financial services, manufacturing, and sales, to government services, health care, and education. Companies and organizations have traditionally relied on real assets such as factories, sales outlets, branch offices, workers, and cash flows as the main components of their business. The emergence of computers has added a new asset to this traditional business model. While computers and other networking hardware have become part of the real assets, an intangible asset, which is the data and information, has created a very challenging environment for the executive hierarchy to manage. Today, with the spread of globalization, managing IT assets, creating value, and controlling risks while inventing IT strategies and policies are as challenging as the very survival for many companies, organizations, and governments.
The purpose of the IT concentration at the MBA Program is to produce business/government leaders with IT backgrounds, who have professional knowledge both in management and IT and can put them into practice in applications such as strategic utilization of IT for their organizations and for policy formation, and IT policy planning. Graduates of MBA program in the IT concentration will be the next generation of leaders who can play a vital role to between IT professionals/engineers and leaders in business and government. They will be capable of understanding basic trends in the development of IT technologies surrounding the Internet, and capture the potential and understand the limitations of business models from an IT perspective. In the curriculum students will first learn basic courses required for acquiring IT and management skills, then develop their skills in specialized courses for IT applications.

The IT concentration in the IUJ MBA program is intended to produce managers who can contribute to policy development for companies and governments through utilization of IT knowledge and skills. It is not intended to produce IT technical experts or engineers. IT knowledge is an essential skill which future leaders should acquire, the same as traditional management skills such as finance, marketing, etc.

The IUJ MBA program covers very basic issues in IT and other areas in the 1st year of study. It enables those who have little IT and/or management background to acquire IT and management knowledge smoothly. After acquisition of solid essential skills, students study advanced topics in accordance with their future career plans in their 2nd year. Students can obtain comprehensive IT skills, both in management and IT technology through their two years of study at IUJ.

Taking advantage of IUJ’s REP (Research and Education Platform)
Students in the IT concentration will be participating in the PLATFORM seminar titled: “ICT Innovations and their strategic use in Governance, Society and Globalization.» The PLATFORM seminar has started in 2006 within IUJ’s new framework for research and education called “IUJ REP.” IUJ REP is to fully exploit the strengths of IUJ. IUJ’s campus is a global community consisting of people from diverse cultural, ethnic and career backgrounds. IUJ has been strongly supported by various stakeholders including the local community, business community, governments and international organizations. IUJ REP accepts the important policy issues of the world as its own research and education agenda. IUJ REP organizes its research and education projects in a way to enhance practical aspects by taking into account the challenges of various organizations and society in the contemporaneous world. Students in the ICT PLATFORM seminar will develop their research for writing their graduation research report. The research will be formulated on a team basis, consisting of students, faculty members, graduates and industry experts. This PLATFORM seminar explores how ICT and related technologies can be strategically used to solve the challenging problems encountered in governance, society and globalization on the perspectives of private sectors, government and non-profit organizations.
